Desk Report: The High Court has ruled that a person with a degree in Homoeopathic and Unani Medicine cannot use the title of doctor before his name. In the verdict, the court suggested the formation of a separate ministry with these alternative medical measures.

Rejecting the rule issued in this regard on Saturday (August 14), Justice Md. The High Court bench of Ashraful Kamal and Justice Rajik Al Jalil delivered the 81-page verdict.

“Unfortunately, under Section 29 of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act, 2010, no one other than an MBBS or BDS degree holder by a registered medical or dental institute of BMDC can use the title ‘Doctor’ before their name,” the verdict said. . There, in the revised notification dated March 9, 2014 of the Health Services Department of the Ministry of Health and Family Planning, the names of Homeopathy, Unani and Ayurvedic officers working in various positions of the operational plan titled ‘Alternative Medical Care’ have been added before their own names. Has given permission, which in a word is illegal without the authority of law.

It is also illegal to allow homeopathic physicians in various branches to use Doctor as a surname before their name in a notification issued by the Bangladesh Homoeopathic Board on February 8, 2020.

Earlier, degree holders in Homoeopathic and Unani medicine had filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking directions to use doctors before their names. The court issued a rule in the light of the writ.

Barrister Rashna Imam and Advocate Khandaker Nilima Yasmin appeared for the writ petition. Barrister Tanjib-ul-Alam was on the other side.
